The Bayelsa State Drug Abuse, Addiction Prevention and Rehabilitation Committee (BADAPARC) has conducted a two-day orientation exercise for teachers of five secondary schools in Nembe Local Government Area on the implementation of a school-based drug prevention programme for adolescents, termed UNPLUGGED. The programme is in line with expectations of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
The schools that participated in the exercise were Government Comprehensive Secondary School, Government Girls Secondary School, and Community Boys Secondary School, all in Nembe-Bassambiri, as well as Nembe National Grammar School and Community Girls Secondary School in Nembe-Ogbolomabiri.
The objective of the programme is to equip teachers with the necessary skills and knowledge to implement the UNPLUGGED programme in their schools. The programme aims to prevent drug misuse among young people, especially adolescents, and promote healthy lifestyles.
The government of Bayelsa State, led by His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri, with the active support of the Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, remains committed to preventing drug misuse, especially among young people, as a key strategy in curbing the menace of drug abuse.
The trained teachers are expected to implement the UNPLUGGED programme in their schools as they resume for a new session in August. The programme is designed to provide adolescents with the necessary skills and knowledge to make informed decisions about drug use and promote healthy lifestyles.
The Bayelsa State Government's initiative to train teachers on the UNPLUGGED programme is a step in the right direction towards preventing drug misuse among young people. The programme has the potential to make a positive impact on the lives of adolescents in Nembe Local Government Area and beyond.
