The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken a significant step towards promoting good governance and accountability at the local government level. The EFCC's Executive Chairman, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has called on political office holders and staff of Local Government Areas (LGAs) to adhere strictly to laid down rules and regulations in the discharge of their duties.
Olukoyede emphasized the importance of compliance in the fight against economic and financial crimes. He noted that sensitization is part of the preventive mandate of the EFCC and that the workshop is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform their duties with competence, transparency, and a deep sense of responsibility. By adhering to rules and regulations, local government officials can promote accountability, transparency, and good governance.
The workshop featured presentations on corruption and abuse of office, prevention, and control strategies. The Ag. Head, Legal and Prosecution Department, Benin Zonal Directorate, ACE I Francis Jirbo, warned participants against abuse of office, noting that it occurs when a public official uses their position to act in a way that is unlawful or contrary to their official duties, often for personal gain or to harm others. Jirbo cited various sections of the laws, including the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act 2000, Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act, and the Criminal Code Act, to enlighten participants on what is expected of them as public office holders.
The Head, Public Affairs, ACE I Williams Oseghale, highlighted the EFCC's successes in the fight against economic and financial crimes, including thousands of convictions secured, billions of naira recovered, and properties forfeited. He noted that the Commission's efforts in dealing with fraud at the local government level have yielded significant results, including the conviction of several local government chairmen and officers. However, he also noted some of the Commission's challenges, including intimidation, harassment, and death threats to its officers, paucity of funds, delay in resolution of cases, and public misconception and cynicism.
The EFCC's call to local government officials to adhere to rules and regulations is a timely reminder of the importance of compliance in the fight against corruption. By working together, the EFCC and LGAs can promote transparency, accountability, and good governance at the grassroots level. We urge all stakeholders to take heed of this call and work towards a more prosperous and corruption-free future for Nigeria.
The EFCC's initiative to promote good governance and accountability at the local government level is a welcome development. By sensitizing local government officials on the importance of compliance and the dangers of corruption, the EFCC is taking a proactive approach to preventing economic and financial crimes. We commend the EFCC for this initiative and urge all stakeholders to support this effort. Together, we can build a more transparent and accountable system of government that serves the needs of all Nigerians.
