Lagos State Launches Tourism Safety Initiative Ahead of Ember Months

In a strategic move to ensure a safe, secure, and enjoyable tourism experience, the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture has launched the Lagos Tourism Support Services platform, bringing together key government agencies to strengthen emergency preparedness, safety awareness, and environmental cleanliness across the state.

The initiative, inaugurated by Mr. Idris Aregbe, Special Adviser to the Governor on Tourism, Arts and Culture, aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda, which aims to create an enabling environment for businesses while promoting Lagos as a safe and tourist-friendly destination. Aregbe emphasised the critical importance of coordination during the ember months, traditionally a period of heightened human and vehicular traffic, festivals, and hospitality activities.

“The ember months come with increased activity in the hospitality and entertainment sector. All hands must be on deck to ensure Lagos remains safe, secure, and clean for both residents and tourists. Our emergency responders must be on standby to mitigate risks while creating opportunities for citizens to benefit from tourism activities,” Aregbe said.

Key agencies involved include the Lagos State Safety Commission (LSSC), Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Agency (LSNSA), Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), and Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS).

Mr. Lanre Mojola, Director-General of LSSC, reiterated the agency’s commitment to enforcing safety standards across all hospitality and tourism events. He noted that inspections and monitoring of hotels, entertainment venues, and event centres would be intensified to prevent accidents, manage crowds effectively, and maintain compliance with safety codes.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Olanrewaju Bajulaiye, highlighted that safety and security are critical pillars of tourism development. He explained that the initiative not only protects lives and property but also boosts investor confidence, reinforcing Lagos as a premier destination for leisure and business.

The General Manager of LSNSA, Prince Dr. Ifalade Ajasa Oyekan, pledged the agency’s support in providing intelligence-led security, crowd management, and surveillance in key tourism corridors and event hotspots. He called on residents, event organisers, and tourists to cooperate with security operatives, stressing that public participation is vital in maintaining a safe environment.

By fostering inter-agency collaboration and community engagement, the Lagos State Government aims to position the state as Africa’s entertainment capital while setting a benchmark for safe and sustainable urban tourism.
