Kaduna Govt: Private Schools Must Seek Approval Before Increasing Fees

The Kaduna State Schools Quality Assurance Authority (KSSQAA) has directed all private school proprietors and proprietresses across the state to seek written approval before increasing school fees.

In a circular signed by Mercy Bainta Kude, Director of the Private Schools Department, and issued on behalf of the Director-General of KSSQAA, the agency reminded school owners that no proprietor is permitted to raise fees or upgrade their institutions without official clearance.

The statement stressed that private schools must strictly abide by extant regulatory requirements on tuition reviews, especially at a time when the state government is reducing fees in its own schools.

KSSQAA outlined the conditions required for any upward review of school fees, which include:

  • Previous fee increments must have lasted at least three years.

  • Approval must follow a resolution from the school’s PTA meeting with an acceptable quorum.

  • Proprietors must obtain express approval from the KSSQAA Director-General after submitting an application letter.

  • The application must include typed minutes of the PTA meeting and handwritten attendance sheets.

  • Clear reasons for the proposed increase must be stated.

  • Current enrollment figures per level (Pre-Basic, Basic, Upper Basic, and Post-Basic) must be included.

  • Both old and new fee structures for all levels must be indicated.

The Authority emphasized that keeping to these requirements was the responsibility of all school proprietors and warned against arbitrary fee hikes.
