Nigeria Customs Service Opens 2025 PR Workshop in Kano, Urges Officers to Uphold Integrity and Stakeholder Trust

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has commenced its 2025 Public Relations Officers Workshop in Kano with a charge to officers to embrace professionalism, innovation, and integrity in building stakeholder trust and safeguarding the institution’s image.

Declaring the event open at the Centre of Excellence, Twin Theatres, Bayero University, Kano, on Monday, September 22, Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, represented by Ag. Deputy Comptroller-General of Enforcement, Inspection, and Investigation, Timi Bomodi, highlighted that the Service operates at the intersection of revenue generation, trade facilitation, and national security. He stressed that in such a sensitive space, communication must extend beyond ceremonial duties, making PR officers crucial interpreters of policy, crisis managers, and custodians of the Service’s reputation.

Delivering the CGC’s keynote, Ag. DCG Bomodi underscored the workshop’s theme, “Beyond Masters of Ceremony: The Strategic Role of Public Relations Officers for Institutional Growth and Stakeholder Trust.” He urged officers to adapt to digital communication, artificial intelligence, and crisis response strategies to counter misinformation and strengthen public confidence.

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, represented by his Director-General of Media, Sanusi Bature, praised the Customs Service for its role in national security, trade, and revenue generation. He stressed that technology should complement, not replace, core human values of honesty, empathy, and responsibility in communication.

Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, Professor Haruna Musa, expressed pride in hosting the workshop, describing it as a bridge between academic learning and real-world practice.

Delivering papers, President of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Ike Neliaku, called on officers to evolve into institutional vision-bearers, while Professor Abdalla Uba Adamu, former Vice Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria, emphasized the strategic use of social media for transparency and accountability.

Resource persons and participants alike agreed that the four-day workshop offers a timely opportunity to sharpen communication skills, strengthen stakeholder engagement, and reposition the Customs Service as a modern, trusted institution.
