Nigeria’s former President, Goodluck Jonathan, has held a closed-door meeting with the National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), David Mark, in Abuja.
The meeting took place late Thursday night at the residence of the former Senate President, shortly after an emergency caucus session that included former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-governors Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna), Abdulfatai Ahmed (Kwara), and Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto).
Though the purpose of the meeting was not immediately disclosed, sources suggest it may be connected to political alignments ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
There have been calls within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) urging Jonathan to join the race and challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. If he chooses to run and wins, Jonathan would be constitutionally entitled to only one term, having previously served as President before losing to Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.
Observers note that Jonathan and Mark share a long-standing political relationship, dating back to 2009 when Mark, then Senate President, played a pivotal role in facilitating Jonathan’s emergence as Acting President during the constitutional crisis that followed the ill health of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
