A potentially catastrophic incident was narrowly avoided on Friday evening along the Felele Expressway in Lokoja, Kogi State, after security operatives quickly contained a fuel tanker accident, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed.
According to Mr. Tenimu Etuku, FRSC Sector Commander in Kogi, the accident occurred near the Crusher area when a fuel-laden truck bound for Abuja became detached from its head and rolled into a ditch. “Nobody was hurt or killed in the accident. The tanker driver and his assistant escaped unhurt,” he stated.
The FRSC patrol team immediately rushed to the scene and called for backup from the police, National Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and Mobile Police units to secure the area. The swift response aimed to prevent residents from attempting to scoop fuel—a practice that has led to deadly fire outbreaks in Niger and Jigawa States in the past.
Commander Etuku noted that some community members tried to access the tanker before security personnel arrived but were promptly chased away. He added that the area has been fully secured in collaboration with local community leaders, who are working with security agencies to ensure no one enters the ditch to collect fuel.
He further appealed to residents of the Crusher community to avoid tampering with the spilled fuel, warning that such actions could trigger a devastating fire disaster. “We are urging everyone to cooperate and leave the fuel untouched to ensure the safety of the community,” Mr. Etuku said.
The incident highlights the importance of coordinated emergency response and community cooperation in preventing tragedies in fuel-related accidents.
