The Nigerian Senate has taken decisive action on internal accountability by dissolving two major security-related committees—specifically the Security and Intelligence Committee, formerly chaired by Senator Shehu Buba, and the Air Force Committee, headed by Senator Godiya Akwashiki. The development unfolded during a tense plenary session where senators expressed deep frustration over what they described as an unacceptable failure to provide timely intelligence reports on pressing national security matters.
Senate Majority Leader Opeyemi Bamidele was emphatic in his criticism of the committees’ performance, stating that the delay in delivering critical reports constituted “a setback to the Senate’s oversight responsibilities.” His remarks set the tone for the chamber’s subsequent action, which culminated in a majority vote authorizing Senate President Godswill Akpabio to formally dissolve the committees and restructure their oversight functions.
Following the dissolution, the Senate issued a stern directive to all remaining security-related committees, mandating the submission of complete security reports within seven days. Senators warned that failure to comply will trigger “appropriate disciplinary action,” signaling a rare enforcement of internal accountability mechanisms within the legislature. This directive underscores the Senate’s growing concern over security lapses and insufficient institutional response to threats.
In the wake of rising insecurity across various regions, the Senate affirmed its intention to intensify investigations into recent security events—among them the killing of General Uba, questions surrounding troop withdrawal from the Federal Government College Yauri in Kebbi State, and other unresolved incidents involving state security operations. The Senate leadership also announced plans to meet with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to formally brief him on the resolutions adopted during the session and to reinforce legislative-executive cooperation on national security.
This assertive move by the Senate signals a heightened urgency within government to improve intelligence flow, strengthen military accountability, and restore public confidence in Nigeria’s security management framework.
