Gunmen have shot and seriously injured Alhaji Yakubu, chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Langai Ward, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State. The incident has renewed security concerns in an area affected by recurring violence and tensions between farming and herding communities.
The shooting reportedly occurred on Saturday night, October 17, 2026, in Langai Ward, where unidentified armed men attacked the local MACBAN leader. Yakubu survived the incident but sustained serious injuries and was reportedly taken to hospital for treatment. The exact location of the shooting, the number of attackers involved and the circumstances leading to the incident have not been publicly established.
The Plateau State chairman of MACBAN, Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, confirmed the attack on Sunday, October 18, saying efforts were underway to establish what happened. He acknowledged that the incident had been reported and that the circumstances surrounding the shooting were being investigated. No detailed account of Yakubu's condition following his admission to hospital was immediately available.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama also reported the incident, citing preliminary allegations that members of a local militia group might have been responsible. However, the identities of the attackers have not been independently verified, and no evidence establishing responsibility has been made public. The allegations therefore remain unproven, and the attack cannot presently be attributed to any particular ethnic or community group.
The shooting comes against a background of recurring insecurity in parts of Mangu Local Government Area, where disputes involving farming and grazing activities, cattle rustling and retaliatory violence have contributed to tensions between communities. Previous incidents have resulted in deaths, displacement and damage to livelihoods, while allegations concerning the involvement of different armed groups have complicated efforts to restore peaceful relations.
The latest attack has raised concerns about the possibility of further violence, particularly in communities where previous incidents have contributed to mistrust. Establishing the circumstances of the shooting and identifying those responsible will be important to preventing unsubstantiated accusations from escalating tensions.
As of Sunday, no arrests had been publicly confirmed in connection with the attack. The Plateau State Police Command had also not issued a detailed public account identifying the suspects or explaining the circumstances in which Yakubu was shot.
The incident leaves several questions unresolved, including the motive for the shooting, the identities of the assailants and Yakubu's current medical condition. Further information from the police and MACBAN is expected to clarify these matters as investigations continue.
