The Federal Government has applauded states that have successfully accessed the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) counterpart funding, describing it as a crucial step toward ensuring the effective implementation of new education policies, including the revised national schools curriculum.
UBEC Executive Secretary, Aisha Garba, gave the commendation in Abuja during a forum with heads of communications from the 36 State Universal Basic Education Boards. Represented by the Deputy Executive Secretary, Razak Akinyemi, she emphasized that states must be deliberate in executing focused policies and align themselves with the federal government’s progressive education agenda.
For years, poor access to counterpart funding hindered the rollout of critical education initiatives across the country. Before 2025, more than 24 states had yet to access their UBEC funds — a development that limited progress in upgrading learning environments and training teachers. UBEC authorities, however, say this trend is changing for the better, with more states now meeting requirements and committing resources to strengthen basic education delivery.
The renewed access to UBEC funds carries significant implications for Nigeria’s education sector. It not only paves the way for smoother adoption of the revised curriculum but also increases the prospects for improved infrastructure, enhanced teacher capacity, and better learning outcomes for millions of schoolchildren. Education analysts argue that consistency in funding access could close gaps between states and foster a more equitable system of basic education nationwide.
With the federal government and states working more closely to deploy resources, the push for quality education is expected to gain momentum in the months ahead. Stakeholders believe that if properly sustained, these efforts could redefine the country’s education landscape and ensure that no child is left behind in the quest for knowledge.
