Anambra Assembly Committee Calls for Overhaul of Local Government Workforce

Published on 5 August 2025 at 11:32

The Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Public Accounts has issued a firm recommendation for the urgent recruitment of fresh personnel into the state’s local government system, citing a looming administrative vacuum caused by an increasingly aging workforce.

The call was made during the committee’s review of the audited accounts of the Anambra State Government for the fiscal year ending December 31, 2024.

Chairman of the committee, Hon. Noble Igwe, expressed grave concern about the dwindling human resource capacity at the grassroots level.

> “It is now difficult to find anyone in the local government system with up to 20 years of service left,” he said. “This trend presents a clear danger to the continuity of governance and service delivery at the grassroots.”

Urgent Recruitment & Training Recommended

The committee stressed that swift recruitment of young and skilled professionals was essential to avert systemic breakdown. Beyond filling vacancies, Hon. Igwe said that new personnel would bring innovation, energy, and modern thinking needed to transform grassroots governance.

He also called for the institutionalization of regular capacity-building programs, such as workshops, seminars, and certified trainings for current local government employees.

> “Continuous training is vital to improving productivity and aligning our local government system with global best practices,” Igwe added.

Financial Oversight & Transparency in Focus

As part of the session, the committee reviewed the financial performance of local councils, emphasizing the need for fiscal responsibility, transparency, and accountability in managing public funds.

Members agreed that without clear steps to reform and reenergize the local government workforce, essential services at the grassroots could grind to a halt.

The committee is expected to present its full report and recommendations to the House of Assembly in the coming weeks. The report could trigger legislative actions aimed at revitalizing Anambra’s grassroots administrative framework.
