The Lagos State Government has emphasized that meaningful environmental change must start in schools across the state. This was highlighted by Dr. Omobolaji Gaji, Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, during the 2025 Annual Environmental Bees Club (EBC) Handlers’ Symposium held at the LCCI Conference Centre, Alausa, Ikeja.
Dr. Gaji, represented by Mrs. Monsurat Banire, Director of Environmental Education Unit, stated that the program is not a routine exercise but a strategic investment in Lagos’s environmental future. He described the Environmental Bees Club as a framework where students interact with the environment not as a theory but as a daily practice of responsibility, innovation, and leadership.
The symposium, themed “Trash to Treasure: Transforming Waste into Resourceful Opportunities in Schools,” focused on turning waste into valuable resources. Dr. Gaji highlighted practical skills such as composting, recycling, upcycling, and creative reuse, which can empower students economically while cultivating sustainable habits. “Compost heaps can become gardens; upcycled waste can spark enterprise. What children learn today can grow into industries and livelihoods tomorrow,” he said.
Dr. Gaji also called on Handlers—the teachers guiding the EBC—to see themselves as co-architects of a greener Lagos, urging them to inspire students to transform challenges into opportunities. “Every project you lead, every lesson you improvise, and every idea you ignite forms a building block towards greener initiatives and lifestyles,” he stressed.
Earlier, Mr. Ramon Fagbolad, Director in the Sanitation Department, described the Environmental Bees Club as the Government’s living classroom for environmental literacy, highlighting the pivotal role of Handlers in shaping behavior change.
The workshop featured a lecture by Mrs. Temitope Okunnu of FABE International on composting as a tool for food sustainability, followed by hands-on training for teachers on generating compost from food waste. Participants included teachers from public and private schools across Lagos State, equipping them with skills to lead students in sustainable practices.
This initiative underscores Lagos State’s commitment to making environmental education central to city planning and civic responsibility, preparing a generation that sees waste not as a problem, but as the beginning of opportunity.
