The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable waste management, hosting a one-day stakeholders’ forum focused on Construction, Demolition, and Disaster Waste (CDDW) management in Ikoyi, Lagos.

Organised by the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) in partnership with Wastecare Solutions Ltd, the forum brought together leaders from the construction and environmental sectors to discuss strategies for tackling the increasing waste from building activities and disaster incidents. Themed “Building Responsibly and Driving Efficiency: Strengthening Stakeholder Collaboration in Construction, Demolition and Disaster Waste Management in Lagos State,” the event emphasized sustainability, safety, and livability.

Delivering the keynote address, the Honourable Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, represented by Mr. Adeoye Babajide, highlighted Lagos’s urgent need to adopt circular economy principles, promoting reduction, reuse, and recycling of construction waste. “Our aim is not punishment, but safeguarding the environment and protecting public health,” Wahab said, warning that non-compliance with waste regulations could lead to penalties, including site closures.

In his remarks, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, LAWMA Managing Director/CEO, represented by Mr. Kunle Adebiyi, stressed that partnerships and coordinated efforts are key to achieving sustainable development. He noted that Lagos thrives on collaboration and that initiatives under the THEMES Plus Agenda reflect this principle.

Guest speaker Dr. Tijani Ajibola presented on “Bridging the Gap between Policy and Practice: Strengthening Compliance in Construction and Demolition Waste Management,” emphasizing responsible waste handling at every stage—from planning and construction to disposal and recycling—to reduce air pollution and ensure a safe, sustainable, and livable environment.

The forum also featured goodwill messages from His Royal Majesty, Oba Abdulwasiu Omogbolahan Lawal (Oba of Iru Land), representatives of Lagos State Ministries, International Facility Management Association, and Lagos State Wastewater Management, among others. Technical sessions allowed panellists to exchange actionable strategies to further strengthen waste management practices in Lagos.
