Manchester City have agreed a blockbuster £125 million deal to sign Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, a transfer that equals the British transfer record and represents one of the most stunning Deadline Day moves in Premier League history. The agreement, reached after intense negotiations over the past 24 hours, will see the 25-year-old Argentina international undergo a medical and sign a long-term contract at the Etihad Stadium. The fee matches the £125 million that Liverpool paid Newcastle United for Alexander Isak exactly one year ago to the day.
The move brings to an end a protracted summer saga that has dominated transfer headlines for months. Chelsea had set an arbitrary deadline of August 14 for offers, indicating they expected Fernandez to stay for the 2026-27 season after that date passed without City making a bid. However, City reignited their interest after their pursuit of Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo ended with the Merseyside club rejecting a bid of up to £80 million. Fernandez will partner England international Elliot Anderson and Moroccan teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi in City's revamped midfield. The Argentine provides the creativity and progressive passing Maresca craves, having excelled under the Italian as a box-crashing, goalscoring midfielder operating from an advanced position.
Fernandez's departure from Chelsea has been acrimonious. He was booed by supporters during a pre-season friendly against Real Sociedad and again in the opening Premier League game at Fulham. The deal reshapes the Premier League's financial landscape. Chelsea have made £415 million from player sales alone this window, surpassing their own record set last summer. City's spending will hit £375 million with Fernandez's arrival, having generated nearly £315 million from sales. Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher believes the move transforms City into Arsenal's closest challengers. "Losing Rodri was a big thing, but if you said they would bring in Elliot Anderson and Enzo Fernandez, you'd say that's a top midfield," Carragher said.
For Fernandez, the move represents a fresh start under a manager who knows how to get the best from him. For Chelsea, it signals a new direction under Xabi Alonso, one built on a culture where players who do not want to be at the club are allowed to leave.
