The Federal Ministry of Education has pledged stronger support for teachers and partnerships aimed at improving Nigeria’s education system. This assurance came during the 11th edition of the Maltina Teacher of the Year Stakeholders’ Engagement Meeting held in Abuja.

The Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, described teachers as “the backbone of national development” and said recognising their work must remain a top priority. She praised the award scheme for not only rewarding outstanding educators but also upgrading school facilities, which directly benefits students.

Professor Ahmad also encouraged organisers to broaden the categories of the awards and ensure more schools, especially Unity Colleges, have access to information about the competition.

Other speakers at the event echoed similar sentiments. The Registrar of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), Dr. Ronke Soyombo, said rewarding teachers boosts morale and reshapes public perception of the profession.

Representatives of Nigerian Breweries Plc highlighted the competition’s achievements since 2015, including support for 278 teachers through cash rewards and international training opportunities. Plans were also announced for the 2025 edition, themed “A Decade of Producing Shining Stars.”

The Secretary General of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Dr. Clinton J. Kpitibio, welcomed the initiative, noting that it provides a rare platform for teachers nationwide to gain recognition for their role in shaping the country’s future.

Now in its 11th year, the Maltina Teacher of the Year competition remains one of Nigeria’s longest-running platforms for celebrating excellence in the teaching profession.
