Court Orders Nnamdi Kanu to Open Defence in Terrorism Trial

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has dismissed a “no case submission” filed by the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, ruling that he has a case to answer in his ongoing terrorism trial.

Presiding judge, Justice James Omotosho, held that the prosecution had provided sufficient evidence requiring Kanu to enter his defence on the charges brought against him. He is facing a seven-count charge bordering on terrorism, treasonable felony, managing an unlawful society, illegal possession of firearms, incitement of public violence, and broadcasts allegedly intended to destabilise Nigeria and threaten its sovereignty.

In a separate ruling, the court also rejected Kanu’s request to be transferred from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) to the National Hospital, Abuja, for medical examination over alleged deteriorating health. Instead, Justice Omotosho directed the President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to set up an independent medical investigation committee to assess Kanu’s health condition. The committee is to submit its report within eight days, following objections raised by the DSS against his transfer to the National Hospital for a second medical opinion.

The case has now been adjourned for the defence to open its presentation.
