The Federal High Court in Enugu on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, commenced the trial of Ikedinachi Grace Nonyelum, an alleged serial property fraudster, before Justice F. O. Giwa-Ogunbanjo. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) presented its first prosecution witness, Inspector Aminu Garba Mohammed, who detailed the events leading to Nonyelum’s prosecution.

Nonyelum faces a two-count charge of obtaining N9 million by false pretence, involving a transaction with Okechukwu Benson Chiewuzie. According to the EFCC, she allegedly induced Chiewuzie to transfer money through a Keystone Bank account, promising to sell him a bungalow at Ogbeke Nike, Enugu, a property she knew she could not deliver.

“That you, Ikedinachi Grace Nonyelum, sometime in February 2022 at Enugu, with intent to defraud, induced one Okechukwu Benson Chiewuzie to give you N9,000,000 under the pretence that you would sell to him a bungalow…which pretence you knew to be false,” one of the charges reads, citing Section 1(1)(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act No. 14 of 2006.

Nonyelum was arraigned on May 29, 2024, and pleaded not guilty, leading to the current trial.

During proceedings, EFCC counsel Assistant Superintendent Blessing Ajogwu called PW1 Aminu Garba Mohammed, who explained how the Commission received a petition from Chiewuzie on November 8, 2022, alleging that Nonyelum had solicited funds for the property but later resold it to another buyer.

The witness testified that the Commission requested Nonyelum’s bank statement from Keystone Bank, revealing that N1.3 million of the total N9 million was paid electronically in three installments:

N500,000 on April 19, 2022

N300,000 on April 21, 2022

N500,000 on September 6, 2022 via POS

The remaining balance was reportedly received in cash, according to the defendant’s statement.

The EFCC tendered exhibits including the petition, the defendant’s statement, Statement of Account, and Certification of Identification, all of which were admitted into evidence.

The court adjourned the trial to January 21, 2026, for continuation.
