There was drama and confusion at an Area Court in Ilorin on Thursday when a woman, Mulikat Yusuf, slumped after her husband, Ishaq Abdulganiyu, insisted on ending their marriage.
Abdulganiyu told the court that he was no longer interested in the union, prompting his wife’s emotional reaction.
Earlier, Yusuf had pleaded with the court, stating that she was not ready for divorce, explaining that after giving birth to six children, she had nowhere else to go.
Witnesses said the mother of six appeared visibly distressed and deep in thought as she left the courtroom following her husband’s declaration. Moments later, she reportedly collapsed outside the courtroom.
Court officials and onlookers quickly rushed to her aid, reviving her after splashing water on her face.
Presiding Judge, Mr. Toyin Aluko, expressed concern over the incident and advised Yusuf to seek reconciliation through family or community mediation.
“The court encourages you to explore all opportunities available to settle the misunderstanding amicably,”
Aluko told her.
The case was adjourned until December 10 for the report of settlement or continuation of hearing.
