The Dangote Group has officially refuted claims linking one of its trucks to a fatal road accident that occurred on Wednesday in Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State. The tragic incident, which took place near Adekunle Ajasin University, reportedly claimed the lives of at least eight people and caused significant damage to several shops along the roadside.
In a statement released on Thursday, Dangote Group clarified that the vehicle with registration number JJJ 365 XB, which has been circulating in reports and social media posts as being involved in the crash, is not owned or operated by the company or any of its subsidiaries. The conglomerate stressed its commitment to safety and responsible operations, emphasizing that all its trucks undergo rigorous compliance checks and safety audits.
The accident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, when the truck reportedly lost control and collided with several commercial establishments, leaving a trail of destruction and chaos. Eyewitnesses reported a scene of panic, with residents rushing to rescue victims and emergency responders arriving to tend to the injured and secure the area.
While the exact cause of the accident is still under investigation by local authorities, preliminary reports suggest that factors such as vehicle overloading, brake failure, or driver error may have contributed. The Ondo State Traffic Management Authority (ODSTMA) has pledged to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the responsible party and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Dangote Group’s statement further urged the public and media to exercise caution in attributing responsibility before investigations are concluded. The company also expressed condolences to the families of the victims and reiterated its commitment to road safety initiatives across Nigeria.
