Amnesty International has issued a strong condemnation over the arrest of human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, by security operatives in Abuja. The organization described the action as an “arbitrary arrest” and another example of the Nigerian government’s growing intolerance toward dissent and peaceful protest.

Sowore was reportedly arrested shortly after leaving the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday, just days after the detention of lawyer Aloy Ejimakor and Emmanuel Kanu, both of whom were involved in organizing a peaceful demonstration calling for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

In a statement released on Thursday evening, Amnesty International criticized what it called the “utter disregard for human rights and the rule of law” by Nigerian authorities, noting that the arrests represent a continuing pattern of repression against those who challenge government actions or demand accountability.

“Once again, Nigerian authorities have displayed utter disregard for human rights and a longstanding demonization of peaceful assembly,” the organization stated. “The authorities must release the trio immediately and unconditionally.”

The rights group further urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to put an end to what it described as the persistent misuse of security forces and the judiciary to silence critics and suppress public activism.

“The government must stop using state institutions as tools for persecuting people who voice dissenting opinions, challenge abuse, or demand justice,” Amnesty International added.

Sowore, who has faced multiple arrests in recent years over his activism and advocacy for democratic reforms, has continued to maintain his commitment to peaceful resistance and civic accountability. His supporters have since demanded his immediate release, accusing the authorities of targeting him for his outspoken criticism of the government.

As of press time, police authorities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have yet to issue an official statement on the reasons behind Sowore’s latest arrest.
