The Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA) at Tin Can Island Port Command (TCIPC) has taken proactive steps in promoting women’s health by organising a breast and cervical cancer awareness campaign in Lagos. The event, held on Friday, 24 October 2024, brought together officers’ wives, female Customs officers, and healthcare professionals to highlight the importance of early detection, preventive screening, and healthy lifestyle choices as strategies for combating cancer.
Speaking at the event, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Frank Onyeka, lauded the organisers for their dedication to women’s welfare, describing the initiative as a “worthy cause aligned with the Service’s objectives.” He added, “It’s better late than never. Cancer awareness is not just for women; it concerns all of us. Some of us did not fully understand the risks until we began asking questions. This event has opened our eyes, and we will continue to support this project to its logical conclusion. No knowledge is lost, and I commend COWA Tin Can for this bold step.”
Comptroller Onyeka also commended the National President, Mrs. Kikelomo Adeniyi, for her leadership in championing women’s welfare, affirming that, “Tin Can Island is for COWA, and COWA is for Tin Can Island.”
The Acting Chairperson of COWA Tin Can Island Chapter, Mrs. Justina Shidali, highlighted the campaign’s focus on educating women about the benefits of early detection and lifestyle changes that can reduce cancer risk. “This gathering reminds us that early detection truly saves lives. We must encourage every woman to go for regular mammograms, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and stay proactive about their health. Today is about hope, education, and unity. Together, we can create a future where breast cancer is no longer a threat,” she stated.
Mrs. Shidali expressed appreciation to the Tin Can Island Command for its support, the medical team led by Dr. Alpha Suleiman, and all participants who contributed to the programme’s success. The campaign included free health screenings, educational talks, and sessions on cancer prevention, symptoms, and treatment options, encouraging attendees to become advocates for health awareness within their families and communities.
