The Sokoto State Government, under the leadership of Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, FCNA, PhD, has partnered with the Presidential Committee on Economic and Financial Inclusion (PreCEFI) and WAWU Africa to launch Project ASHA (Advancing Sustainable Heritage and Autonomy), a national initiative aimed at equipping 200,000 Nigerian women with digital, entrepreneurial, and green skills across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The programme, launched at the Presidential Villa in Abuja through the She’s Included initiative, seeks to empower women with the knowledge and tools to create sustainable economic opportunities while linking rural and urban communities through technology and cooperative networks.
Representing Sokoto State at the event, Honourable Bashar Umar Kwabo, Commissioner for Innovation and Digital Economy, praised the initiative, reaffirming the state government’s commitment to fostering women’s participation in technology, digital literacy, and entrepreneurship.
During the launch, Dr. Nurudeen Abubakar Zauro, Technical Adviser to the President on Economic and Financial Inclusion and Executive Secretary of PreCEFI, described Project ASHA as a transformative effort that extends beyond training to building long-term economic independence and community-focused enterprises.
WAWU Africa outlined a six-month implementation plan for the project, structured around two major training cohorts, focusing on four pillars: Digital Skills, Green Energy, Entrepreneurship, and Financial Literacy. The initiative also introduces the “ASHA Battalion” cooperative framework, enabling participants to pool resources, access funding, receive mentorship, and establish viable businesses within their communities.
The event drew government officials, development partners, women advocates, and representatives from the financial and digital sectors, all commending the project as a critical step toward inclusive economic growth and social advancement in Nigeria.
Sokoto State’s involvement in Project ASHA underscores the government’s dedication to digital transformation, women’s empowerment, and inclusive development, reflecting Governor Sokoto’s vision for harnessing technology and innovation to improve the livelihoods of citizens.
