In a significant move to boost staff welfare and productivity in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector, the Federal Government has commenced disbursement of ₦10 million interest-free loans under the Tertiary Institutions Staff Support Fund (TISSF). The initiative is aimed at enhancing the living standards, motivation, and overall efficiency of academic and non-academic staff across universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
The launch, held at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), was attended by the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, CON, who hailed the program as a key component of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for human capital development and educational excellence.
Dr. Alausa explained that the TISSF provides zero-interest loans of up to ₦10 million, with the loan amount capped at one-third of an applicant’s annual gross salary. The funds can be utilized for a range of purposes including housing, healthcare, transportation, and small business ventures, allowing beneficiaries to improve both personal and professional stability.
“This initiative is a demonstration of the government’s appreciation for the hard work and dedication of education workers. We urge all beneficiaries to utilize the funds responsibly and ensure timely repayment to sustain this program for future generations,” Dr. Alausa said.
According to the Federal Ministry of Education, over 9,000 staff members from 219 tertiary institutions have been approved, with more than 400 beneficiaries already credited. The Fund was developed in just four months under the Nigerian Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI).
Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, described the scheme as a visionary welfare program that stabilizes the workforce, motivates employees, and fosters productivity. She stressed that beneficiaries should leverage the opportunity to enhance their living conditions and invest in productive ventures.
The Ministry also reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and continuous monitoring, emphasizing that the long-term success of the fund depends on responsible usage and prompt repayment by recipients.
For staff members, this initiative represents not only financial relief but also an opportunity to invest in personal development, housing, or entrepreneurial ventures, which could yield long-term benefits. Beneficiaries are encouraged to strategically plan the use of funds to ensure both personal growth and sustainable repayment, helping to secure the program for future staff.
