As Anambra State gears up for its crucial governorship election this Saturday, November 8, 2025, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has made a passionate appeal to citizens to exercise their democratic rights.

At a press briefing held on Thursday, 6th November 2025, at the INEC headquarters in Abuja, Chairman Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, emphasized that voter apathy remains the greatest threat to the state’s democracy. Highlighting a worrying historical trend, he noted that turnout in past elections has sharply declined—from 25.5% in 2013, to 20.1% in 2017, and 10.27% in 2021.

Professor Amupitan praised the impressive progress in voter preparedness, revealing that 98.8% of registered voters have collected their PVCs following an extended collection period. He urged all eligible voters to come out without fear or favour, stressing that democracy thrives when citizens actively choose their leaders.

In a move to ensure inclusivity, the Commission has partnered with TAFAfrica to deploy Sign Language Interpreters across all polling units, enabling the 3,456 registered voters living with disabilities in Anambra to fully participate in the election.

On logistics, he assured that all 5,718 polling units will open promptly at 8:30 a.m., supported by over 24,000 trained ad hoc personnel and 6,879 BVAS devices. Security will be tight, with 45,000 police officers deployed, but neutrality and fairness are guaranteed, the Chairman assured.

Concluding his address, Professor Amupitan delivered a direct message to the electorate:

“You have collected your PVCs, Security will protect you, and INEC is ready for you. So, come out on Saturday, vote freely, vote peacefully, vote proudly.”

The Commission’s clarion call underscores its commitment to credible, transparent, and inclusive elections, marking a critical moment for Anambra’s democratic future.
