The Senate of Nigeria has issued a directive to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and other relevant regulatory bodies to fully enforce the ban on packaging high-alcohol content beverages in sachets, effective December 2025.

The move comes amid growing concerns over public health and safety, as high-alcohol beverages sold in sachets have been linked to underage consumption, alcohol abuse, and associated social vices.

Senators emphasized that the sachet packaging encourages easy access, particularly for youths, and undermines ongoing efforts to combat alcohol-related health risks and social problems.

NAFDAC and allied agencies are expected to intensify monitoring, compliance checks, and enforcement operations to ensure that producers and distributors adhere to the new regulation. Penalties for violations are likely to include fines, product confiscation, and possible suspension of business licenses.

The Senate’s directive highlights a growing commitment to public health advocacy and regulatory enforcement, aiming to curb irresponsible alcohol consumption and promote safer consumption practices in Nigeria.
