Lagos, 2025 – The Honourable Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s determination to transform the nation’s 115 Federal Unity Colleges into models of excellence, innovation, and national unity. The announcement was made at the 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Principals of Federal Unity Colleges held in Lagos.
Professor Ahmad called on principals to rededicate themselves to reforming secondary education as a key driver of economic empowerment and national development. She emphasized the importance of curriculum reform, teacher professionalization, and digital integration, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“The Ministry will continue to support teacher certification and training through the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) and the National Teachers Institute (NTI),” Professor Ahmad assured participants.
During the event, Hon. Dr. Mark Oseni, Chairman of the House Committee on Basic Education, praised the principals’ professionalism and promised legislative support for enhanced funding and oversight of the colleges. Representing the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Adebayo Adegboye encouraged the adoption of innovative educational practices under the “Light Load, Stronger Minds” initiative, designed to promote vocational and digital learning.
Other speakers, including Dr. Iyela Ajayi (NSSEC), Mrs. Eucharia Onodu (WAEC), and Barr. Mrs. Chinedu Amure (USOSA), stressed the significance of digital literacy, ethics, and strong industry partnerships in modern education. The AGM also featured the presentation of awards to top-performing Unity Colleges, recognizing excellence in administration and academic performance.
The Ministry reiterated its commitment to strengthening Unity Colleges through continuous curriculum improvement, teacher development, infrastructure upgrades, and innovative practices, ensuring these institutions serve as beacons of national unity and educational quality.
