The Chief Security Adviser for the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) Nigeria, Mr. Senyo Kufe, paid a courtesy visit to the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force (JTF) North East, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) in Maiduguri as part of his nationwide familiarization and operational assessment tour.

Mr. Kufe, who assumed office in August 2025, described the North East as the “engine room” of Nigeria’s security operations, underlining the region’s critical role in national and humanitarian security.

“Without military support, UN staff cannot stand on their own in the North East Region,” Mr. Kufe stated, emphasizing the reliance of UN operations on Nigerian military collaboration.

During the visit, he commended the Nigerian military for its professionalism and continuous support to UNDSS operations. He noted that the engagement provided an opportunity to reinforce the bond between the UN and the Theatre Command, particularly in areas of security guidance and assessment.

Mr. Udit Mehta, Area Security Adviser and Field Coordination Officer, North East, expressed appreciation to Theatre Commander Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar for his leadership, sustained collaboration, and unwavering support to UNDSS activities.

“The visit aims to strengthen partnership and seek enhanced cooperation in ensuring the safety and security of UN personnel operating in the North East,” Mehta said.

Responding, Major General Abubakar reaffirmed OPHK’s commitment to supporting UNDSS in fulfilling its mandate. He highlighted ongoing military operations and rescue efforts in the region, stressing the importance of strong civil-military relations and continued collaboration with the UN and other international stakeholders.

Discussions during the visit focused on enhancing cooperation in emergency preparedness, disaster response, information sharing, and security management. Both parties agreed to strengthen joint training programs and improve coordination mechanisms to bolster operational safety and risk management.

The visit featured the presentation of souvenirs to Mr. Kufe, signing of the visitors’ register, and a group photograph to commemorate the occasion. Mr. Kufe was accompanied by UNDSS officials, including Security Analyst Mr. Christian Munteanu and Field Security Associate Major Nuhu Mantana (Retired). Senior officers of OPHK, including Deputy Theatre Commander Air Vice Marshal Essen Efanga, Component Commanders, and Principal Staff Officers of the Headquarters Theatre Command, were also in attendance.

The visit highlights the ongoing partnership between the Nigerian military and the UN in maintaining security and operational effectiveness in the North East.
