The Lagos State Government has intensified its push to reduce poverty and rising youth unemployment by prioritising digital and entrepreneurship skills for undergraduates across state-owned tertiary institutions.
Speaking at the Job Initiative Lagos (JIL) training programme held at Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Sule, said the initiative reflects the Sanwo-Olu administration’s commitment to its THEMES Plus Agenda. He stressed that no student in Lagos should graduate without the skills needed to thrive in today’s rapidly evolving digital economy.
Despite competing demands on the state’s resources, Sule explained that the government continues to invest heavily in digital and entrepreneurial knowledge because it remains a proven pathway to self-reliance for young people. He urged students to take the programme seriously, reminding them that the training is funded with taxpayers’ money and must yield tangible impact for the state’s economy.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Adeniran Kasali, told participants that the curriculum was designed by experts with real-world experience in navigating tough business environments. He encouraged students to begin applying the skills gained immediately, adding that the state has empowered them to become future employers rather than job seekers.
The three-weekend training is currently holding simultaneously at LASU and the Lagos State College of Health Technology (LASCOHET), Yaba. It forms a strategic part of the THEMES Plus Agenda aimed at equipping students with globally competitive digital competencies and solidifying Lagos’ position as a rising digital hub in West Africa.
Through the JIL programme, the Lagos State Government says it hopes to build a new generation of tech-enabled, business-savvy graduates capable of driving innovation, creating jobs, and accelerating the state’s economic growth.
