Stakeholders in Ondo State’s education sector have launched a coordinated effort to tackle escalating cases of student indiscipline, bullying, cultism, and violent altercations in public secondary schools. The move comes amid growing reports of street fights and misconduct being amplified on social media.

The meeting, held at the Ministry of Education, was led by Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, who warned that students caught engaging in such acts would face strict penalties, including expulsion and handover to security authorities. “Students involved in acts of indiscipline would be heavily punished from now on… Any student caught with this shameful behavior would be expelled and handed over to the security agents,” he stated.

Principals of affected schools were invited to provide first-hand information on the causes of the recurring indiscipline and to collaborate on preventative strategies. Dr. Oluwadahunsi Oke, Chairman of the Teaching Service Commission, emphasized the role of school leadership in curbing unruly behavior, while Administrative Secretary Dr. Akindele Ige noted that similar interventions in previous years had yet to fully resolve the problem.

A communique from the meeting outlined several measures to restore discipline, including strict monitoring of students to eradicate cultism and street fighting, enforcement of anti-loitering policies, increased guidance and counseling for vulnerable students, and mandatory transfer certificates for mid-stream admissions. Security personnel are to be engaged to safeguard schools, and law enforcement will accompany government shuttle buses during peak hours. Terminal class students will also be closely monitored to prevent examination malpractice and visits to unverified “miraclec centers.”

Stakeholders called for strengthened collaboration between parents, school authorities, community leaders, and security agencies to ensure the measures are effectively enforced. The meeting included representatives from the Ministry of Education, Teaching ex Service Commission, All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPPS), and the National Association of Parents Teachers Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN).

The Ondo State government’s initiative underscores a renewed commitment to curbing indiscipline, promoting safe learning environments, and safeguarding the integrity of the state’s public education system.
