Activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore has raised serious concerns over Nigeria’s allocation of police resources, highlighting a growing imbalance in the country’s security framework.
According to Sowore, no fewer than 200 policec officers are assigned to each of the 36 state governors and the Federal Capital Territory, totaling over 7,000 officers dedicated solely to protecting political leaders. In addition, hec notes that the Inspector General of Police has officially deployed 11,000 officers as VIP guards.
Sowore warned that this massive diversion of manpower comes at a high cost to public safety. “This massive allocation of armed police officers to political elites happensc while communities are left undefended and public policing collapses nationwide,” he said, adding, “It is the reason terror groups are overrunning the country.”
He further criticized the current security setup, stating that “It is a security framework designed to protect power, not the people.”
The activist’s post underscores a growing public debate over the prioritization of security resources in Nigeria, with many analysts pointing to the need for reforms that balance the protection of political figures with the safety of ordinary citizens.
