Sabon-Birni, Sokoto State — Tension has heightened across parts of Sabon-Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State following reports of unusual movements by suspected armed bandits in the area on Tuesday evening, raising fears of a possible attack on rural communities.
According to accounts from residents and local sources, about 20 motorcycles carrying suspected bandits were sighted along the Gatawa–Tarah axis, moving in the direction of Kurawa community. Witnesses said the convoy moved in a coordinated manner, triggering anxiety among villagers who have previously experienced attacks linked to armed groups operating in the region.
At the same time, another group of armed men, believed by locals to be connected to the network loyal to notorious bandit leader Bello Turji, reportedly crossed from Isa Local Government Area into Sabon-Birni LGA. The simultaneous movements from different directions have deepened concerns that the area may be facing a coordinated operation.
Residents described the atmosphere as tense, with many households restricting movement as night approached. Some community members said they had alerted local vigilantes and traditional leaders, while others called on security agencies to intervene urgently to prevent a possible assault.
Sabon-Birni and neighbouring local government areas have remained vulnerable to banditry and related crimes in recent years, with armed groups frequently exploiting forest routes and border communities to evade security forces. Previous attacks in the area have involved raids on villages, killings, abductions and the rustling of livestock, leaving residents highly sensitive to any unusual movement.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had not issued an official statement on the reported sightings. However, residents expressed hope that early alerts would prompt a rapid response to forestall violence and reassure affected communities.
Community leaders and locals are urging authorities to increase patrols along known entry routes and forest corridors, while appealing to residents to remain vigilant and share credible intelligence with security operatives.
