Awgbu, Anambra State, Nigeria — The Anambra State Police Command has taken into custody a masquerade accused of engaging in unprovoked and violent attacks on innocent residents during a public event in the Awgbu community of Orumba North Local Government Area. The arrest follows the circulation of disturbing videos on social media showing the individual assaulting passers-by, disrupting a cultural gathering and causing fear among members of the public.

In a statement released on January 14, 2026, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that the suspect has been detained and that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend any other individuals involved. Authorities described the actions captured in the viral footage as “totally unacceptable, unlawful, and will not be tolerated under any guise,” emphasising that those responsible will be brought to justice.

According to credible media reports, the incident took place during the Ofala Festival held in honour of the late traditional ruler of Awgbu, Igwe M. C. Okechukwu (Ezedioramma II, Ezekanunu III). Video clips widely shared online show the masquerade charging at bystanders, forcefully pushing riders off their motorcycles and damaging property, while some of its followers appeared to cheer on the chaotic behaviour.

In one clip, the masquerade was seen overturning an elderly man riding a motorcycle, causing him to fall and hit his head on a parked vehicle. Another video shows the same individual destroying public address equipment at the event, adding to the atmosphere of disorder and panic among attendees.

Police sources said that the arrest is part of efforts to maintain public order and reinforce the rule of law, particularly during cultural and traditional gatherings. While masquerade displays are an important aspect of Igbo heritage and community festivals, authorities have underscored that cultural expression does not provide licence for violence, harassment or intimidation of residents.

The operation signals heightened sensitivity by the Anambra State Police toward incidents where traditional symbols or festivities are abused to commit criminal acts. Law enforcement officials have reiterated their commitment to protecting citizens and preventing similar outbreaks of violence at public events.

Residents and cultural leaders alike have reacted to the video and subsequent arrest with concern, discussing the need for greater oversight of masquerade activities and community safety protocols during festivals. Some have called for local authorities to work with traditional institutions to ensure that cultural practices are conducted responsibly and without harm to participants or bystanders.

Police investigators are continuing their work, examining the viral videos and interviewing witnesses to determine the full extent of the involvement by the suspect and any possible accomplices. The command has assured the public that further developments in the case will be communicated in due course as the investigation progresses.
