The Kano State Police Command has taken decisive action in response to a gruesome attack that claimed the lives of a woman and her six children in the Dorayi Chiranchi area of Kano metropolis, arresting three principal suspects in an intelligence‑led operation as part of efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice. The incident, which stunned residents and reignited concerns about community safety, occurred last weekend when unidentified assailants violently invaded a family home and carried out the fatal assault.

According to a statement issued by the police, officers received a distress call at approximately 12:10 p.m. on Saturday, January 17, reporting that hoodlums had forced their way into the residence of Haruna Bashir in Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters, where they attacked his wife, Fatima Abubakar, 35, and her six children with dangerous weapons. The victims were found with severe injuries and were quickly evacuated to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, where medical professionals confirmed all seven were dead on arrival. The brutality of the attack sent shockwaves through the community, prompting an immediate and intensified police response.

In reaction to the atrocity, the Commissioner of Police in Kano State, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, PhD, ordered an urgent and comprehensive crackdown to identify and apprehend those responsible. Within a short period, tactical teams acting on credible intelligence conducted targeted operations that culminated in the arrest of three principal suspects believed to be directly involved in planning and executing the attack. Key exhibits and evidence were reportedly recovered during the sting, strengthening the ongoing investigation. Police confirmed that detectives from the Criminal Investigation Department, under the leadership of Assistant Commissioner of Police Wada Jarma, are now working to link the suspects to the scene and determine the full extent of their involvement.

The names and identities of the suspects have not yet been publicly disclosed, as investigators continue to piece together the motive and chronology of events leading up to the massacre. Sources within the police command told journalists that forensic evidence, witness testimonies, and exhibits recovered from the field are expected to form the basis of forthcoming charges once the probe is concluded.

Governor Abba Yusuf condemned the killings in strong terms, describing the incident as “barbaric, senseless and an assault on shared humanity,” and directed security agencies to relentlessly pursue and prosecute those responsible. The governor also instructed the Kano State Neighbourhood Corps to step up patrols and community surveillance in vulnerable areas to deter further violence and reassure residents of their safety.

The devastating attack has plunged Dorayi Chiranchi and neighbouring communities into mourning. Residents expressed deep grief and outrage over the loss of life, particularly the children, calling on security agencies to ensure swift justice. Many community figures criticised the rising pattern of violent intrusions and urged enhanced collaboration between residents and law enforcement to prevent similar attacks.

Security analysts say the rapid arrests demonstrate a notable improvement in intelligence‑led policing within the state, reflecting intensified efforts by the Kano command to deter violent crime and respond effectively to major incidents. However, they caution that sustainable safety will depend on broader strategies that address root causes of insecurity, including unemployment, youth disenfranchisement, and gaps in community policing.

This latest bloody episode follows national concerns over the spate of attacks on civilians in parts of northern Nigeria, where both criminal gangs and unconventional armed groups have been linked to similar incidents in recent years. While the motive for the Dorayi Chiranchi killings remains under investigation, police have pledged to leave no stone unturned in identifying all individuals involved and bringing them to court.

In the coming days, authorities are expected to provide further updates on the suspects’ identities, the evidence collected, and possible charges. Meanwhile, Governor Yusuf has reiterated his administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging citizens to assist security agencies by reporting suspicious activities swiftly.
