Four suspected bandits were apprehended near Akure Airport in Ondo State following a coordinated security operation involving aviation security personnel and local law enforcement agencies. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria confirmed the arrests, highlighting the effectiveness of joint efforts to secure the airport and surrounding communities.

The operation was triggered after a distress alert reported suspicious individuals near the airport perimeter close to the Eleyewo community. Security personnel from FAAN, the Nigerian Air Force, the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police Force, and local vigilante groups promptly launched a coordinated search of the area. Some of the suspects attempted to flee, but four were eventually captured by the joint team.

Eyewitnesses noted that the suspects had been moving in the vicinity of the airport, raising concerns among nearby residents and airport personnel. The sighting prompted Air Traffic Controllers to alert security teams, who quickly mobilised to investigate and prevent any potential threat to airport operations.

The four suspects were handed over to the Nigeria Police Force Area Command in Akure for further interrogation and investigation. Police authorities are currently working to determine their identities, possible criminal networks, and any plans to target airport facilities or the surrounding communities.

Officials praised the swift collaboration among aviation security teams, military personnel, and local security outfits, describing the operation as a model of effective cooperation. FAAN also reiterated its commitment to maintaining the safety of passengers, staff, and airport infrastructure through ongoing perimeter surveillance and strengthened security protocols.

Residents near the airport expressed relief at the prompt response but noted that the presence of armed individuals close to the airport underscores the importance of vigilance and community reporting. The authorities urged members of the public to report any suspicious activity to help prevent future incidents.

Security analysts observed that while airports are generally well-patrolled within operational zones, outer perimeters near farming communities and undeveloped land can be vulnerable to criminal activity. The joint operation demonstrates the importance of rapid inter-agency responses and intelligence sharing to safeguard critical national infrastructure.

The arrests highlight ongoing security challenges in parts of southwestern Nigeria, where criminal activity, including kidnappings and armed banditry, has increased. Authorities emphasized that continued vigilance, community cooperation, and coordinated security measures are essential to protecting travellers, staff, and residents in and around airport environments.

Investigations into the suspects’ motives are ongoing, and authorities have assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to prevent future threats to the airport and surrounding communities.
