A second man has been charged with murder after a fatal assault in Lewisham, south‑east London, as police continue to investigate the death of 41‑year‑old Nigerian national, Taiwo Ekerin.

Chibueze Chukwurah, 34, of Royston Road, Glasgow, was arrested on suspicion of murder on 5 June 2026, charged on 7 June, and appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 8 June, where he was remanded in custody. He is scheduled to appear at the Old Bailey on 10 June.

The development follows the earlier remand of Maxwell Oguanaya, 32, of Eastfield Road, Enfield, who was charged with murder on 5 June and appeared at Ealing Magistrates’ Court the same day. Oguanaya was remanded in custody and is due to appear again on 9 June. A second man, aged 34, was also arrested on suspicion of murder on 5 June and remains in police custody.

The Metropolitan Police had responded to reports of an altercation on Lewisham High Street at about 04:40hrs on Sunday, 24 May. Officers arrived to find a man with a serious head injury, later identified as Taiwo Ekerin. He was treated by London Ambulance Service paramedics at the scene before being rushed to hospital, where he died on Saturday, 30 May.

The police have not disclosed the full circumstances of the altercation. Ekerin’s twin brother, Kehinde, has described the attack as unprovoked and said the family is devastated. A GoFundMe appeal launched to cover funeral expenses had raised £3,710 of a £10,000 target as of 8 June.

The Nigerian High Commission in London has been informed of the case and is monitoring proceedings. The Metropolitan Police have asked anyone with information to contact them on 101 or anonymously via Crimestoppers.
