A 50-year-old grandmother and her four-year-old granddaughter lost their lives after a heavy downpour accompanied by a severe windstorm swept through Bara community in Kirfi Local Government Area of Bauchi State, the police have confirmed.

The Bauchi State Police Command identified the victims as Aisha Sagir and her granddaughter, Aisha Shuaibu, both residents of Unguwar Katsinawa in Bara Village. The incident occurred on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, following a torrential rainstorm that brought down trees, collapsed walls, and destroyed several homes in the rural farming community.

The police spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, confirmed the tragic incident in a statement issued on Wednesday, June 10, 2026. “Preliminary reports indicate that on June 9, 2026, Kirfi Local Government Area experienced heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds. The severe weather incident resulted in the tragic loss of Aisha Sagir, 50 years old, and her granddaughter, Aisha Shuaibu, 4 years old, both of Unguwar Katsinawa, Bara Village, Kirfi LGA,” the statement read.

The rainstorm also destroyed several houses, livestock, and other valuables estimated to be worth millions of naira, the police spokesperson added. Operatives attached to the Kirfi Divisional Police Headquarters have visited the affected area to assess the full extent of the damage and maintain law and order.

The Commissioner of Police in Bauchi State, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, extended his condolences to the government and people of Kirfi Local Government Area over the disaster. “The Commissioner of Police expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved family and the entire people of Kirfi LGA. He prayed to Almighty Allah to grant the deceased eternal rest and give the family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss,” Habib said.

The police command assured residents that it would continue to collaborate with relevant agencies to support disaster response efforts and safeguard lives and property across the state. The police also urged members of the public to remain vigilant during the rainy season and to promptly report emergencies to security agencies for swift intervention.

Residents of Bara town described the incident as one of the worst disasters to hit the area in recent times, calling for urgent intervention from government authorities and humanitarian organizations. The floodwaters caused extensive destruction to property, leading to the collapse of several houses and leaving many families displaced. Livestock worth substantial amounts were reportedly washed away, while other valuables and household belongings were destroyed.

The disaster highlights the recurring vulnerability of rural communities to flooding and windstorms during Nigeria’s rainy season, and the need for proactive mitigation measures, including early warning systems and improved drainage infrastructure.

As the community continues to assess the full extent of the damage and bury their dead, the tragedy serves as a painful reminder that in Nigeria’s rural north, nature can sometimes be as deadly as bandits.
