The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, as a national public holiday in commemoration of this year’s Democracy Day. The announcement was made on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji‑Ojo, who said the day is set aside to honour the country’s democratic journey and the sacrifices of its founding heroes.

In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Aishetu Ndayako, the minister congratulated Nigerians on the occasion and urged citizens to reflect on the efforts of the nation’s founding fathers. He emphasised the importance of maintaining Nigeria as a united, secure, peaceful and indivisible entity. Tunji‑Ojo also highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to implementing positive reforms aimed at reviving the nation’s economy and enhancing security.

Democracy Day is observed annually on June 12 to commemorate the annulled presidential election of 1993, widely believed to have been won by the late business mogul, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola. The election was a landmark event in Nigeria’s political history, representing the nation’s most credible democratic exercise at the time. Abiola died in detention on July 7, 1998, after the military government annulled the election. In 2018, former President Muhammadu Buhari officially changed the Democracy Day date from May 29 to June 12, in honour of Abiola and the nation’s struggle for democratic freedom.

As a national public holiday, banks, schools, government offices and most businesses across the country will remain closed. The day is set aside for citizens to reflect on the gains of democracy and the importance of maintaining a stable, inclusive and accountable system of governance.

In line with the celebration, the Federal Government has rolled out a series of activities leading up to the day. These include a World Press Conference held on Thursday, June 4, 2026; Special Juma’at Prayers on Friday, June 5; an Inter‑denominational Church Service on Sunday, June 7; a Democracy Day Public Lecture on Tuesday, June 9; Youth and Women‑Oriented Programmes on Wednesday, June 10; and the Presidential Broadcast and Democracy Day Gala Night on Friday, June 12.

The Ministry of Interior called on all Nigerians to use the occasion to recommit to the values of democracy, patriotism and national unity, while also observing safety protocols during the celebrations.
