PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria – Two female students writing the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and a commercial motorcyclist have lost their lives in a fatal road accident along the Choba Bridge on the East-West Road in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The crash occurred on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, while the students were returning from their examination centre.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the students had just completed their papers at Odoha Community Secondary School in Emohua Local Government Area. The examination centre is roughly 30 minutes from the Choba Bridge, which serves as a major gateway to the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) host community. According to sources, the motorcycle carrying the two students collided with a moving truck under circumstances that remain under investigation.

“The students were coming back from Odoha Community Secondary School, Emohua LGA, after writing the WAEC exams,” one eyewitness told TheCable. “It happened today. Three people died: one okada rider and two WAEC female students.”

Several other persons sustained injuries in the crash and were rushed to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital for treatment. A video of the incident posted on social media showed the bodies of the victims lying on the road after the impact.

Officers from the Choba Divisional Police Headquarters have launched an investigation into the crash. As of the time of filing this report, the Rivers State Police Command and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had not issued an official statement on the incident. Police authorities have urged residents to remain calm and assured the public that a full investigation will be conducted.

The Choba axis of the East-West Road has long been known for heavy traffic and frequent accidents. The tragedy has renewed calls for improved traffic regulation, stricter enforcement of safety standards, and infrastructure upgrades to reduce the risk of further loss of lives, particularly for students and commuters who rely heavily on motorcycles for transportation in the area.
