The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), operating under the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI, has delivered a devastating blow to terrorist networks in the Lake Chad Basin, killing scores of fighters, including several senior commanders, and destroying a fortified terrorist enclave in Metele, located in the northern Tumbuns area. The precision strikes, conducted in the early hours of Wednesday, June 10, 2026, were described by military officials as a “major operational success” and a significant victory in the ongoing counter-terrorism war in the North-East.

The operation was triggered by credible intelligence and verified by extensive Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions, which confirmed the presence of a senior terrorist commander, multiple hideouts, and heightened insurgent activity in the area. NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, confirmed the strikes in a statement on Thursday, June 11, 2026. He detailed that NAF air assets were deployed to engage the confirmed targets with precision weaponry.

“Acting on the intelligence, NAF air assets engaged the identified targets with precision. Upon arrival, aircrew observed significant terrorist movement around the concealed structures, confirming the presence of hostile elements,” Ejodame stated. “Following positive target identification, the aircraft executed devastating strikes on the designated locations.”

A post-strike Battle Damage Assessment (BDA) confirmed the successful outcome of the mission. The enclave was completely destroyed, and scores of terrorists operating in the strategic waterway region were neutralised. Ejodame said the term “scores” was used to indicate a large but not yet fully counted number of casualties, given the nature of the air campaign. Daily Trust further reported that the terrorists had repeatedly launched deadly ambushes against Nigerian troops in the region in recent weeks, including a previous attack that killed and beheaded several soldiers before the latest aerial offensive.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, personally commended the airmen and support personnel involved in the operation and reaffirmed the NAF’s commitment to sustained offensive action. “We will continue to leverage our air power capabilities to locate, strike, and destroy terrorist targets wherever they are found,” Aneke was quoted as saying. “The Nigerian Air Force remains resolute in denying terrorists freedom of action and ensuring they have no safe haven within our sovereign territory.”

The air interdiction mission in the Lake Chad Basin was not the only successful air operation recorded this week. In a separate but concurrent effort, NAF airstrikes in Zamfara State under Operation Hadarin Daji eliminated two notorious bandit leaders identified as Alhaji Auta and Kachalla Ruga. According to military sources cited by Eons Intelligence, the air component invaded enclaves situated within Gusami Forest and West Tsamre Village in Birnin Magaji Local Government Area, killing several terror-bandits in a combination of air interdiction and ground offensive attacks. Officials disclosed that the two kingpins were key figures in orchestrating deadly raids, kidnappings, and cattle rustling in the Zamfara axis. The troops reportedly launched a follow-up ground assault to mop up the area and exploit intelligence from the operation.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian military continues to intensify its pressure across various theatres. In the North-East, troops of Operation HADIN KAI have killed over 50 terrorists in recent ground and air offensives, including a top ISWAP commander identified as Khalifa Umar, a member of the terrorist group’s Shura Council. Several of his close aides were also neutralised in a precision airstrike around the Kirta and Arina Ciki area. In the North-West, the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, has also killed several kingpins in the border regions of Sokoto and Zamfara states and dismantled fortified hideouts in the Tureta Local Government Area.

The sustained aerial bombardment and coordinated ground offensives mark a strategic shift toward degrading the terrorists’ mobility, supply lines, and command structures. Security analysts say the elimination of high-value commanders disrupts operational coordination, potentially triggering internal power struggles within the groups. However, they caution that unless the military maintains the tempo of these operations and consolidates territorial gains, insurgents may exploit security gaps to regroup.

As Air Marshal Aneke reiterated the Air Force’s mission, the overwhelming firepower displayed in the Lake Chad Basin and Zamfara indicates a renewed commitment to offensive warfare. The military, however, continues to face the challenge of holding recaptured territories and preventing the civilian population from bearing the brunt of reprisal attacks. As the bodies of the slain commanders are buried in the rubble of their destroyed strongholds, the message from the NAF is clear: no corner of Nigeria’s forests will remain a safe haven for those who terrorise the state.
