Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, has granted clemency to 97 inmates at the Kaduna Correctional Centre as part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.

The exercise took place on Friday, 12 June 2026, during a visit to the correctional facility in Kaduna, where the governor also announced financial assistance and rehabilitation support for the beneficiaries.

Governor Sani said the decision was guided by constitutional provisions under the Prerogative of Mercy, acting on recommendations from the Kaduna State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, which reviewed eligible cases before approval was granted.

He explained that the clemency covered a combination of full release, sentence commutation, and payment of fines, depending on the circumstances of each case.

The governor also announced cash grants for the released inmates and offered them access to vocational training programmes in state-owned skills acquisition centres located in Soba, Rigachikun, and Samaru-Kataf.

According to him, the initiative is aimed at supporting reintegration into society and reducing the likelihood of reoffending by equipping beneficiaries with practical skills for self-reliance.

Governor Sani described Democracy Day as a moment to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey and honour those who fought for the restoration of civilian rule. He emphasized values of justice, freedom, national unity, and rehabilitation.

He urged the freed inmates to take advantage of the opportunity to rebuild their lives, warning that successful reintegration would require commitment from both individuals and society.

The governor also appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community organisations to support the reintegration process, stressing that correctional reform requires collective responsibility.

As part of broader reforms in the correctional system, he approved the donation of a utility bus to the Nigerian Correctional Service, Kaduna Command, along with medical equipment and supplies to improve healthcare services within the facility.

The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Kaduna State, Sir James Kanyip, described the clemency exercise as a demonstration of compassionate governance and a balanced approach to justice and reform.

Nigeria’s Democracy Day, observed annually on June 12, commemorates the annulled 1993 presidential election widely regarded as the country’s freest and fairest, and honours the democratic struggle that led to the return of civilian rule in 1999.
