Suspected Boko Haram terrorists launched a devastating early-morning assault on Pissa village in the Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State on Saturday, June 13, 2026, killing an unknown number of residents and abducting scores of women and children, according to multiple local sources.

The attack occurred at approximately 5 a.m., with heavily armed assailants, numbering over 100, sweeping through the remote community. Witnesses reported that the gunmen fired sporadically, forcing terrified residents to scatter into the surrounding bushes, and set many homes ablaze. Local vigilante groups were reportedly overrun by the sheer number of attackers, who warned they would strike nearby villages, including Kabe and Sukumba, next.

As troops remain absent from the area, the terrorists continue to hold the community hostage. "They are still here, taking women and children. They are killing some and burning our houses," a distraught villager said in a WhatsApp voice note. The victims' plight is compounded by the destruction of the only bridge linking Wawa, a garrison town, to the surrounding villages. A local security operative revealed that the bridge was destroyed by Boko Haram two months ago, making access by road impossible and leaving only air support as a possible intervention.

The Niger State Police Command and military authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident. The silence from authorities and the lack of aerial surveillance or military intervention have fueled frustration and desperation among survivors.

This attack is the latest in a string of atrocities linked to a Boko Haram splinter faction led by Mallam Sadiku, which has been attempting to establish a stronghold within the Kainji Lake National Park forest reserve. The group's reign of terror in the region includes the abduction of over 300 students from St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Papiri, Niger State, in November 2025, and a brutal assault on Woro in Kwara State in February 2026, which left dozens dead and over 100 people, mostly women and children, in captivity.
