At least 20 people have been killed in a brutal attack by suspected bandits on the remote farming community of Fesken Rafi in Arewa Local Government Area of Kebbi State, marking yet another devastating chapter in the wave of rural violence sweeping across the North‑West. The Kebbi State Government confirmed the incident on Saturday, June 13, 2026, and a high‑level government delegation, led by Deputy Governor Senator Umar Abubakar Tafida, visited the community to commiserate with grieving families and assess the damage.

The assault was carried out by armed men on motorcycles who stormed the village a few days before the delegation’s arrival, according to local officials. Chairman of Arewa Local Government Area, Sani Tela, and the member representing Arewa Constituency in the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Nuradeen Kangiwa, told the delegation that the attack claimed at least 20 lives and caused immense suffering within the farming settlement. The gunmen set several houses ablaze and carted away livestock, residents said, though no group has claimed responsibility for the massacre.

During the condolence visit, Deputy Governor Tafida assured residents that additional security personnel and operational resources would be deployed to the area to strengthen security operations, restore normalcy and prevent further attacks. “We share in your grief and remain committed to ensuring the safety of lives and property across Kebbi State,” he said. The state government also expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing the attack as a tragic loss.

Traditional leaders, including the Dikkon Kabi, Alhaji Kabiru Sulaiman, who represented the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Sama’ila Muhammad Mera, and the District Head of Bui, Alhaji Abubakar Dan-Malam, received the delegation and praised the government’s intervention. They appealed to the state government to construct a road linking Fesken Rafi to the main highway, arguing that improved accessibility would enhance security response, boost economic activities and improve the living conditions of residents.

The attack highlights the continuing security challenges facing rural communities in parts of Kebbi State, despite ongoing efforts by security agencies and the state government to curb banditry and other criminal activities.
