KATSINA, Nigeria — In a brazen display of terror, armed bandits on the night of Saturday, June 13, 2026, imposed a staggering ₦20 million levy on the Kwandawa community in Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State, warning residents that failure to pay would cost them their homes and their lives. The levy, which the gunmen said was in retaliation for the killing of one of their members in the area, was accompanied by a house‑to‑house looting spree that saw them cart away bridal gifts, household items, and other valuables belonging to newly married women. Their reign of terror did not stop there; the assailants later moved to the villages of Tsaraka and Maturi, where similar reports emerged of newlyweds being stripped of their hard‑earned dowry possessions.

The attack, which is said to have targeted the homes of several newlyweds, was a coordinated operation that saw the gunmen systematically target homes, firing sporadically to instil fear and force compliance. Witnesses described how the bandits, who arrived on motorcycles and were heavily armed with AK‑47 rifles, broke into homes in the middle of the night, demanding cash and valuables. They specifically targeted bridal gifts, including bedding, cooking utensils, and electronic appliances, which are often given to newly married couples to help them start their lives together.

“They took everything we had bought for our daughter’s wedding,” a distraught resident, who pleaded anonymity, told this reporter. “We had saved for years to buy those items, and now they are gone in a single night.” The raids, which lasted for several hours, left the communities in a state of shock and terror, with many residents now living in fear of further attacks.

The imposition of the hefty levy is part of a disturbing trend in the North‑West, where criminal gangs increasingly hold entire communities hostage, dictating terms of existence and effectively turning vast rural areas into tax‑paying fiefdoms under their control. From Katsina to Zamfara, bandits have perfected the art of extortion, demanding millions of naira from poor farming communities for the “privilege” of cultivating their own lands.

A similar incident was reported on the same weekend in the Garin Lamido and Yan Shuni communities in Bakori Local Government Area, also in Katsina, where bandits imposed a ₦10 million levy on each community. In another development last month, bandits in the Gidan Mai Jimina and Garangozai communities of Malumfashi LGA also demanded a ₦5 million levy and a new motorcycle, threatening violence if their demands were not met. These incidents highlight a region where state authority is rapidly being eroded by non‑state armed groups.

Security analysts say the looting of bridal gifts is a calculated strategy. By targeting the most cherished possessions of new couples, the bandits are not only enriching themselves but also crushing the spirit of the communities, signalling that no aspect of life—not even joy and celebration—is safe from their grasp. The theft of these items is particularly devastating, given that many families spend years, and often indebt themselves, to afford the lavish gifts that are a cornerstone of local tradition.

The attacks on Kwandawa, Tsaraka, and Maturi come despite repeated promises by the Katsina State Government and security agencies to protect vulnerable communities. Governor Dikko Radda had recently opened a door to dialogue with bandits, urging them to lay down their arms in exchange for reintegration into society, an offer that has evidently been ignored by the criminal elements now terrorising the region. The state police command has yet to issue an official statement regarding the weekend raids.

As the sun rises over the devastated communities of Malumfashi, the question on the lips of every resident is a painful one: How much longer must innocent civilians bear the crushing burden of this conflict? With every passing day and each new assault, it seems the answer is tragically open‑ended.
