MAKERA, Plateau State – Troops of Operation ENDURING PEACE (OPEP) have arrested a former police inspector who was dismissed from service, following an intelligence-led operation that uncovered his alleged role in an interstate arms trafficking syndicate supplying weapons to criminal groups involved in terrorism, banditry and kidnapping. The Nigerian Army confirmed the arrest of Inspector Danjuma Yusuf, formerly attached to Nigeria Police Force Base 7 in Abuja, in a statement issued on Monday, June 15, 2026.

According to the military, the breakthrough came on Sunday, June 14, after troops of Sector 6 received credible intelligence about the movement of illicit firearms across state lines. The suspect was travelling in a white Peugeot vehicle from Jos South Local Government Area towards the Makera axis of Riyom Local Government Area in Plateau State when he was identified, placed under surveillance, and intercepted at a military checkpoint in Makera. A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of a significant cache of weaponry, including two locally fabricated pistols, 167 rounds of 9mm ammunition, three cans of pepper spray, and a jackknife. The troops also recovered two mobile phones, two cutlasses, a police staff identification tag, photographs showing the suspect in police uniform, two Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards, a National Identification Number (NIN) card, and cash amounting to N73,300.

The Army’s statement noted that Danjuma Yusuf had been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force prior to his arrest. Preliminary investigations already indicate that he is a key figure in a well‑organised interstate arms trafficking syndicate, allegedly supplying weapons to criminal elements engaged in terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes. “Further intelligence indicates that the suspect is a key figure in an interstate arms trafficking syndicate, allegedly supplying weapons to criminal elements involved in terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes,” the Army stated.

The suspect is currently in military custody, where he is undergoing further interrogation as investigators work to identify other members of the network, including financiers, associates, and supply channels. The Army described the arrest as a significant disruption of illegal arms trafficking networks and a testament to the effectiveness of ongoing intelligence‑driven military operations aimed at curbing the proliferation of illicit weapons. The Nigerian Army reiterated its commitment to working with other security agencies to safeguard lives and property, and urged the public to continue providing timely and credible information to support operations against criminal networks.
