The Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna on Monday, June 15, 2026, adjourned the trial of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, to June 24, 2026, after two of his co-defendants failed to appear before the court. The former governor was present at the court premises, arriving around 9:30 a.m., accompanied by officials of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), and personnel of the Nigeria Police Force.
The presiding judge, Justice Rilwan Aikawa, ruled that the matter could not proceed as scheduled due to the absence of the two co-defendants, whose presence is required for certain stages of the proceedings. El-Rufai’s trial, which has drawn significant public attention, involves allegations of abuse of office, financial impropriety, and fraud during his eight-year tenure as governor. The ICPC alleges that public funds were released for projects that were either not executed or not properly accounted for. El-Rufai has consistently denied all charges.
The court had previously granted El-Rufai bail on April 14, 2026, in the sum of ₦200 million with conditions, including two sureties — one a serving or retired civil servant at Grade Level 15, and the other a recognised traditional ruler. The former governor’s legal team has since applied for a variation of the bail conditions, though a separate Kaduna State High Court declined to grant him bail in a related matter. The trial is now scheduled to resume on June 24, 2026.
