A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, has launched a blistering attack on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, branding him "the most anti-democratic element ever seen in this world" and vowing that the opposition will stop his re-election bid in the 2027 general elections. The statement, which Melaye posted on his official social media handle on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, marks a significant escalation in his verbal assault on the administration, coming just days after he accused the President of undermining democratic institutions and playing politics with the lives of Nigerians.
Melaye's latest broadside follows a series of scathing remarks made over the past months, in which he has repeatedly characterised President Tinubu as a "totalitarian" and an enemy of democratic governance. In a recent appearance on the 'MIC On' Podcast, he specifically accused Tinubu of taking over the responsibilities of the judiciary and acting as a "court of law" in political matters. On Tuesday, Melaye went further, declaring that the opposition would not allow the President to entrench what he described as a "monarchical system" in Nigeria. "We will stop him," Melaye said, in reference to Tinubu's anticipated re-election campaign.
In his remarks, Melaye alleged that President Tinubu is actively working to undermine democratic structures in the country. He accused the President of teleguiding the Supreme Court and of attempting to use state institutions to clamp down on opposition voices. "Tinubu is a totalitarian, that is why he is taking over the responsibilities of the judiciary. He is not a court of law to declare who is illegal or not," Melaye had said earlier. He further accused the President of wanting a "coronation" rather than an election in 2027, stating that Tinubu wants Nigerians to practice a monarchical system of government. The former senator has also linked his criticism of Tinubu to the ongoing crisis within the ADC, which he claims is being manipulated by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Melaye asserted that the ADC is the only party that can challenge the APC and that the ruling party has become "desperate" in the face of what he described as an "exodus" of politicians into the opposition. He insisted that his fight is not about the ADC but about the survival of democracy in Nigeria.
Melaye's tirades come amid rising political tensions ahead of the 2027 elections. President Tinubu has already secured the APC's presidential ticket, while opposition forces are struggling to form a united front. Melaye, a vocal supporter of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has expressed optimism that Nigeria will experience a "political rebirth" in 2027. He has also declared that Nigerians cannot afford another four years of Tinubu's "corrupt, reckless and incompetent administration". Melaye's comments have drawn a sharp response from the Presidency, which has previously described his remarks as "loud, empty, and predictable". However, with the 2027 elections approaching, Melaye's rhetoric is likely to further intensify the political debate and sharpen the divide between the ruling party and the opposition.
