EFFURUN, Nigeria – A 100‑level student of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE), Delta State, has been allegedly stabbed to death by his biological brother following a disagreement over a pair of bathroom slippers. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, June 16, 2026, at Hostel C within the university premises, sending shockwaves through the academic community.
The suspect, identified as Joshua, also a 100‑level student of the institution, is alleged to have stabbed his younger brother multiple times with a dagger after an argument escalated into violence. The victim, whose name has not been officially released, was found behind the hostel bleeding heavily from multiple stab wounds. Despite efforts by fellow students to assist him, he succumbed to his injuries before medical help could arrive. His remains have since been deposited in a mortuary.
According to eyewitness accounts, the two brothers had been involved in a prolonged disagreement that had previously led to them distancing themselves from each other. They later agreed to meet behind the hostel in an attempt to resolve their differences. However, the meeting reportedly turned tragic when the argument escalated, leading the suspect to allegedly stab his younger brother several times before fleeing the scene.
Despite his injuries, the victim reportedly managed to crawl from the location to another section of the hostel, where he was discovered by fellow students who raised the alarm. Images circulating online show the injured student lying in a pool of blood while being assisted by other students.
Reacting to the incident, the Vice‑Chancellor of FUPRE, Professor Ezekiel Agbalagba, confirmed the death and described the development as tragic. He noted that the university had begun efforts to track down the suspect and hand him over to law enforcement authorities. “It was a misunderstanding between two brothers of the same mother, the same father. We are trying to get the young man who committed heinous crimes and hand him over to the police. As of now, we are still looking for him,” Agbalagba said. He further noted that the campus was “calm” and assured parents and students that university authorities were on top of the situation.
The Delta State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident to SaharaReporters on Wednesday, noting that the motive behind the killing has yet to be ascertained. “The cause of the murder has not yet been ascertained, but the incident has been confirmed,” he said.
Reports indicate that a bounty of N1 million has been announced for information that could assist in locating and arresting the suspect, who remains at large. The incident has thrown the FUPRE community into shock, with many students expressing sadness and disbelief over the fatal outcome of what reportedly began as a minor dispute.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities had yet to release an official statement beyond the Vice‑Chancellor’s confirmation, while investigations into the incident continue.
