The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has blacklisted three local government areas in Kebbi State from the posting of corps members over escalating security concerns, while also requesting the relocation of its orientation camp from Dakingari to a safer location, the scheme’s state coordinator announced on Tuesday, June 16, 2026.

Bala Dabo Kagarko, the NYSC coordinator in Kebbi, disclosed the decision while speaking with journalists at the temporary NYSC orientation camp in Basura, Jega Local Government Area. He said the corps would no longer post members to Augie, Arewa, and Sakaba local government areas to protect the safety of young graduates participating in the national service programme. “For the safety of corps members, we are no longer posting them to Augie, Arewa and Sakaba local government areas of the state,” Kagarko said.

The decision comes amid a resurgence of banditry and terrorist attacks in parts of Kebbi State. Last week, suspected Lakurawa insurgents reportedly killed at least 20 people in Fasken Rafi, a village in Arewa Local Government Area, one of the areas blacklisted by the NYSC. The Kebbi State Government described the attack as tragic and extended condolences to the families of the victims, while Deputy Governor Umar Tafida led a delegation to the affected community on Saturday, reaffirming the state’s commitment to tackling insecurity.

Kagarko also revealed that the NYSC had requested the relocation of its orientation camp from Dakingari to the temporary facility in Basura, Jega, due to the deteriorating security situation. He lamented that the number of corps members posted to Kebbi had dropped drastically, with the state now recording the lowest number of corps members in the country. “We no longer have enough doctors to post to state hospitals, and there are not enough corps members to deploy to schools and other areas where they are needed to contribute to development,” he said. “Several appeals have been made to the appropriate authorities, but we are yet to receive a response”.

The NYSC coordinator expressed concern over the impact of the shortages on critical sectors that rely on corps members for manpower, including healthcare and education. He disclosed that several appeals had been made to relevant authorities to reverse the trend and improve the number of corps members assigned to the state, but no positive response had been received so far. Kagarko expressed hope that ongoing engagements with stakeholders would eventually yield results and help restore confidence in Kebbi as a destination for national service participants.
