The Nasarawa State Police Command has issued a stern warning to politicians, their supporters, and political groups against engaging in political rallies, processions, and campaigns in violation of the provisions of the 2026 Electoral Act, following a violent clash between supporters of rival political office seekers in parts of the state that resulted in the destruction of property, vandalisation of campaign billboards, and damage to vehicles belonging to innocent members of the public. The warning was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ranhan Nansel.
According to the statement, the command noted that Section 98 (1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, stipulates that political campaigns shall commence not earlier than one hundred and fifty (150) days before polling day and shall end twenty-four (24) hours prior to the day of the election. The Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro, expressed concern over the activities of some political supporters whose actions threaten the peaceful atmosphere currently enjoyed across Nasarawa State. He reiterated that the Nigeria Police Force remains neutral and committed to providing a level playing field for all political actors while ensuring the protection of lives and property. Accordingly, all political parties, aspirants, support groups, and their agents were advised to strictly comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act regarding the commencement and conduct of political campaigns, rallies, processions, meetings, and other related activities or face the full wrath of the law.
The warning comes amid rising political activities in the state, with tensions building ahead of the 2027 general elections. The police command vowed to enforce the provisions of the Electoral Act without fear or favour, and urged political actors to conduct their activities within the bounds of the law. The Nasarawa State Police Command reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring a peaceful electoral process in the state.
