The Anambra State Police Command has provided financial assistance to support the urgent medical treatment of a 10-year-old boy who was allegedly subjected to severe abuse by his guardians in Isiowulu, Awada, Obosi, in Idemili North Local Government Area, the police have confirmed. Operatives attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, made the donation after witnessing the severity of the child's condition and the pain he was enduring, according to a statement issued on Thursday, June 18, 2026, by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.
The boy, whose name has been withheld to protect his identity, was reportedly living with a guardian who subjected him to repeated abuse. Eyewitnesses alleged that the abuse was captured in a viral video and photographs circulating on social media, which prompted public outcry and drew the attention of security agencies. During interrogation, the principal suspect, Mrs. Chisom Chukwuyere, confessed to using burning plastic to inflict burns on the victim, according to police sources. Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the case: Chukwudi Chukwuyere, 40; Chisom Chukwuyere, 30; and Arum Goodluck, 16, all of whom are currently in police custody.
The police command said the financial support was aimed at facilitating the boy's immediate medical care and recovery, describing the gesture as part of its responsibility to protect children from abuse and other forms of violence. The command also announced that investigations into the alleged abuse had been intensified, with assurances that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law. "The Command remains steadfast in enforcing laws designed to protect children from abuse, neglect, exploitation and all forms of violence," the statement said.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, reaffirmed the command's resolve to work closely with relevant government agencies, child protection organisations and community stakeholders to safeguard the rights, safety and welfare of children across the state. He also reiterated the police command's commitment to promoting justice, compassion and the protection of human rights, in line with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police. The victim is currently receiving medical treatment and is under state protection, according to the Anambra State Government, which has also intervened in the case. The First Lady of Anambra State, Dr. Nonye Soludo, visited the boy in the hospital on Tuesday and pledged to take full responsibility for his rehabilitation and recovery, presenting relief materials, including food items and cash support, to assist the child during his treatment.
The case is one of several disturbing incidents of child abuse that have come to light in Anambra State in recent weeks. In a separate but related development, police operatives arrested a 33-year-old suspect, Ifechukwu Okechukwu, over the alleged murder and secret burial of his 23-year-old girlfriend in Nkpor, Anambra State. The police command commended residents for their vigilance and timely provision of information, noting that public cooperation continues to play a vital role in exposing criminal activities and assisting security agencies in apprehending suspects. "We appreciate the support of residents whose prompt information has helped security agencies uncover crimes and bring offenders to justice," the statement added.
The police command urged members of the public to continue supporting the police and other security agencies by reporting suspicious activities and criminal conduct through the command's emergency lines and the nearest police station. As investigations continue, the police have assured the public that all individuals found culpable in the abuse case will face the full wrath of the law.
